Initial Coin Offering (ICO)

An ICO is a fundraising method that trades future crypto coins for cryptocurrencies which have an immediate, liquid value.

Business Glossary provided by Plannit.ai
An Initial Coin Offering is a means by which funds are raised for a new cryptocurrency venture. Startups issue their own token in exchange for ether or bitcoin, which is akin to the shares purchased in an IPO. Investors buy the tokens hoping the project will be successful after launch, and the tokens will gain value. ICOs have been subject to scrutiny and regulation as they have been used both for legitimate fundraising and scams.
